Database Development and Consulting
Excelisys takes both a professional and personal pride in building, supporting and integrating relational database applications. Does that make us geeks? Yes. But it also makes us a great business partner. Our development and consulting team will study your existing data solution(s), procedures, and work flow processes and come up with short– and long–term objectives for an agile development plan that will address your unique needs.
Whether it be resource management, finances, project administration, sales/marketing support, product management, job tracking, manufacturing, e–commerce, or other critical areas of your operation, your growth and competitive position will be determined by how you manage and react to information. Excelisys helps by providing leading edge technical, development, and business expertise to assist you in creating something that is intuitive and powerful.
While we do “play” in a few areas of technical expertise, Excelisys’ philosophy on technology tends to be “agnostic.” We will use the right technology for the right job based in part on deployment strategy, feature requirements, functionality demands, implementation, and user needs. We are not hooked on the marketing hype, nor are we compensated by ANY of the providers whose technologies we use to build your solutions.
We use the technologies we use because they have proven to be reliable, affordable and efficient; are widely used by the geek and nerd masses; and usually have a better use longevity.
Our talented staff, which includes over eight FileMaker Certified Developers, has been working with FileMaker Pro® since 1986. We have contributed articles, tips, and tricks for various trade magazines, including FileMaker Pro Advisor. We were honored to be selected by FileMaker, Inc. to develop the “FileMaker Business Tracker”, a solution for tracking customers, contacts, sales, inventory, invoices, and more!
“FileMaker Pro database solutions to your specifications while exceeding your expectations.”
FileMaker Pro® has matured into a very powerful and sophisticated tool for developing database solutions and still maintains a rapid development cycle that is much shorter than other comparable database development frame–works. FileMaker Pro® offers a wealth of new features and functionality including enhanced security, web and SQL integration. FileMaker Pro Migration/Conversion
|
  |
 |
Since the release of FileMaker® Pro 7 in 2004, the file format has been changed to support a wide range of new features. To continue using your existing files from previous versions with FileMaker Pro 7 through 11, you must convert these files to the file format used in the newer versions of FileMaker Pro.
But is conversion the right path? Or should you rebuild? We liken the dilemma to the homeowner’s decision about whether to remodel or build a new home. What is the best path for your business? Excelisys can help you figure it out.
We’ve been working with the new versions of FileMaker Pro for what seems like centuries (but in reality has been more like 7 years). Excelisys also has the distinction of being the designers and developers of the original “FileMaker Business Tracker,” the first real–world example of a multi–user relational system based on the new versions of FileMaker Pro.
Conversion
We can help with the conversion process of your old FileMaker Pro 4/5/6 solutions up to the new and improved FileMaker Pro 11. Here’s how we do it:
- We clean up your current files, removing obsolete information.
- Design and implement new database security in FileMaker Pro 11.
- Convert your files and thoroughly test your converted database.
- Populate the converted database with current data.
- Retest.
- Deploy the converted database.
Rebuilding
Because there are extensive changes and improved features since FileMaker Pro 7, it might make sense to re–create your database in FileMaker Pro 11 rather than converting it in its current design and structure. Recreating your database in FileMaker Pro 11 enables us to remove obsolete functionally and benign code, and import data from your original files into a more streamlined system, not to mention take advantage of the additional benefits afforded by the latest version of FileMaker Pro 11.
If you feel like you can tackle conversion on your own, download this conversion guide that FileMaker, Inc. has put together. If not, give us a call.

Another database technology good for web integration is the open source MySQL®. MySQL® has become the world’s most popular open source database because of its consistent fast performance, high reliability and ease of use. It’s used in more than 11 million installations ranging from large corporations to specialized embedded applications on every continent in the world. Not only is MySQL one of the world’s most popular open source databases, it has become our choice for the new generation of applications built on the LAMP stack (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP / Perl / Python). MySQL runs on more than 20 platforms, including Linux, Windows, OS/X, HP–UX, AIX and Netware, affording you the kind of flexibility that puts you in control.
So when you want expert MySQL consulting, MySQL support, and MySQL development services, Excelisys has had the pleasure of providing these services to a variety of companies, organizations, and individuals worldwide. We are also proficient with other related technologies that integrate MySQL such as FileMaker Pro, Servoy, PHP, XML, Flash, and many others to address the unique needs and demands of today’s businesses. The Excelisys team has built a solid track record and reputation for providing effective consultation and support, no matter how big or small the project scope, company size, or budget.

PostgreSQL is another powerful, open source relational database system. It has more than 15 years of active development and a proven architecture that has earned it a strong reputation for reliability, data integrity, and correctness. It runs on all major operating systems, including Linux, UNIX (AIX, BSD, HP-UX, SGI IRIX, Mac OS X, Solaris, Tru64), and Windows. It also supports storage of binary large objects, including pictures, sounds, or video.
As an enterprise class database, PostgreSQL boasts sophisticated features such as Multi–Version Concurrency Control (MVCC), point in time recovery, tablespaces, asynchronous replication, nested transactions (savepoints), online/hot backups, a sophisticated query planner/optimizer, and write ahead logging for fault tolerance. It is highly scalable both in the sheer quantity of data it can manage and in the number of concurrent users it can accommodate. PostgreSQL systems can manage in excess of 4 terabytes of data.
So when you want expert PostgreSQL consulting, PostgreSQL support, and PostgreSQL development services, Excelisys has had the pleasure of providing these services to a variety of companies, organizations, and individuals worldwide. We are also proficient with other related technologies that integrate with PostgreSQL such as FileMaker Pro, Servoy, PHP, XML, Flash, and many others to address the unique needs and demands of today’s businesses. With Microsoft™ SQL Server, Microsoft™ officially threw its hat into the database management ring. The current version of Microsoft™ SQL Server (which as of this writing is Microsoft™ SQL Server 2008), aims to make data management self–tuning, self–organizing and self–maintaining. In addition, with the development of SQL Server “Always On” technologies, Microsoft™ hopes to provide near–zero downtime.
Microsoft™ SQL Server 2008 includes support for structured and semi–structured data, including digital media formats for pictures, audio, video and other multimedia data. In current versions, such multimedia data can be stored as BLOBs (binary large objects), but they are generic bit–streams. Intrinsic awareness of multimedia data will then allow specialized functions to be performed on them. According to Microsoft™ Corp., Microsoft™ SQL Server 2008 can be a data storage backend for different varieties of data: XML, email, time/calendar, file, document, spatial, etc. It can also perform search, query, analysis, sharing and synchronization across all data types.
Microsoft™ SQL Server has been touted as one of the more affordable database management system solutions, and the latest iteration of Microsoft™ SQL Server 2008 R2 shows increased performance in scalability. While perhaps not the best solution for database warehouses exceeding 20 terrabytes, Microsoft™ SQL Server is a reliable and low–cost alternative that seems to improve with each version.
Excelisys has had the opportunity to work with Microsoft™ SQL Server for a wide range of clients and projects. As custom solution developers, the majority of our work with Microsoft™ SQL Server has involved performing maintenance, functionality tweaks, fixes, feature enhancements and sub application feeds for established, or newly created, Microsoft™ SQL Server deployed solutions.

Oracle released their first commercially available relational database system in 1979, and 30 years later remains an industry leader in the development of relational database systems. Their latest database offering, Oracle Database 11g Release 2, promises to lower IT costs and improve performance by consolidating business applications onto scalable database grids, compressing data onto low-cost storage partitions for faster performance and eliminating idle data center redundancy. Oracle supports Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and UNIX platforms.
Excelisys has assisted clients in integrating and implementing subsystems into existing Oracle systems, as well as posting and pulling data via ODBC/JDBC and XML feeds from Oracle databases.
